dyne:bolic
dyne:bolic is a LiveCD Linux distribution focused on multimedia production, designed to let you record, edit, encode, and stream audio and video without installing anything to your hard drive. It provides a complete multimedia environment with tools for creative work, making it ideal for artists, musicians, and media creators. Early versions of dyne:bolic (1.x and 2.x) could run on modest hardware with an i586‑class CPU and as little as 64 MB of RAM, while version 3.0 recommended a Pentium II or better with at least 256 MB of RAM. The last release from the old 3.x line, 3.0 beta 4, appeared in September 2011.
After more than a decade, development resumed with dyne:bolic 4.0.0‑beta, released in March 2024. This new version is based on Devuan 5 with the Linux kernel 6.8 and introduces a modern desktop experience using KDE Plasma 5 with “Activities” tailored to different creative workflows such as streaming, audio, video, graphics, and publishing. As a 100 % free, live‑bootable system endorsed by the Free Software Foundation, dyne:bolic 4 continues the project’s mission of providing an accessible, multimedia‑ready platform without proprietary software.
