Damn Small Linux
Damn Small Linux (DSL) is an ultra-lightweight Linux LiveCD distribution created by John Andrews and Robert Shingledecker. Originally based on Knoppix and Debian, it was designed to run on extremely old or resource-limited hardware—even systems as modest as a 486DX with just 16 MB of RAM. The entire system fit into an ISO of around 50 MB and used lightweight window managers like Fluxbox and JWM, making it one of the smallest fully functional desktop operating systems ever created.
The classic DSL releases focused heavily on minimalism and portability, offering a compact set of essential applications such as a web browser, text editor, and basic multimedia tools. It could run from a live CD, USB drive, or be installed on a hard disk. The last stable release of the original line, version 4.4.10, was published in November 2008, after which development largely stopped.
In 2024, Damn Small Linux has been revived with a new version in development. Unlike the original, this modern iteration is based on antiX 23 (i386) and targets a larger size of around 700 MB, reflecting updated software and hardware support. While no longer as tiny as the original 50 MB system, the new DSL aims to preserve the original philosophy of efficiency and usability on older machines while adapting to more modern computing needs.
